Opioid misuse and overdose deaths remain a persistent public health crisis in the United States, with children and adolescents increasingly impacted. Addressing this complex issue requires innovative, practical strategies that support safe, effective care.
This on-demand presentation offers learners a clear understanding of the opioid epidemic and its implications for pediatric populations. Participants will examine quality improvement approaches and clinical interventions designed to reduce harm, support safe prescribing, and ensure adequate pain management for children and adolescents – both in the clinical setting and after they return home.
Objectives:
- Describe the opioid crisis in the United States and its impact on children and adolescents.
- Discuss innovative ways to combat the opioid crisis through quality improvement.
- Understand how to implement similar interventions at your institution.

Inpatient Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
Nationwide Children's Hospital
Jennifer Weiner DNP, APRN-CNP, CPNP-AC/PC, EBP-C is an acute and primary care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who works at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the Orthopedics Department. For the past 12 years Jenny has managed patients admitted to the Orthopedic Service post-operatively for both planned and emergent surgeries. Jenny received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree with a Clinical Expert focus from The Ohio State University in 2019 and is passionate about evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and improving outcomes for all patients and their families. She has done considerable work with opioid stewardship, creating a safe way to prescribe for patients post-operatively. Her work has been presented at state and national conferences and her DNP study was published in a peer-reviewed journal. She is an active volunteer for both the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. In her free time, Jenny enjoys acting, dancing, and singing with local community theatre groups and choirs and loves playing endless games of fetch with her 5-year-old lab named Lucy.
